History

Formed in 1989, the Friends of Africa, Inc. is a non-governmental organization that works with local African governments and organizations to facilitate access to high quality women’s cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment services in the Afro region. We target the most vulnerable populations and use an approach that integrates on-site workforce training with service delivery and clinical infrastructure development.

Our specific areas of focus consist of the following:

  • Building ecosystems for the surgical treatment of gynecologic malignancies.
  • Designing and implementing novel clinical platforms at the primary healthcare level to downstage and treat breast cancer.
  • Collaborating with traditional social infrastructures (African chiefs, traditional healers and marriage counselors) to increase demand for cervical and breast cancer screening services.
  • Mass cervical and breast cancer screening camps using low-cost technology.

To date, the African nations in which we have worked are :

  • Rwanda
  • Zambia
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Sierra Leone
  • Malawi

The amount and quality of expertise within the African region in the domain of cervical cancer control is immense. There is a need to harness, coordinate, and share it in a focused manner”
